Theatre

During his 28-year professional acting career, David Loar has concentrated on Shakespeare but also performed in many modern and contemporary works. From 2001 to 2008, he was a member of the Blackfriars Resident Troupe of the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA, playing over 70 roles including Shylock, Prospero, Richard II, Cassius, Claudius, Lord Capulet, and Ebenezer Scrooge.  He toured the US for two years with ASC's predecessor, Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, two years with Chamber Repertory Theatre of Boston, and one year with National Shakespeare Company.  1989—91, David studied acting in the Studio Program at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, NY.  He also studied for one summer with the National Shakespeare Conservatory.  In Charleston, SC, David is a member of the Acting Ensemble at Charleston Stage Company, performing in the historic Dock Street Theatre.  In the 2017-18 season with CSC, he played Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol  for the second consecutive year and Richard Burbage in Shakespeare in Love. Past roles in Charleston include Robert Figg, John W. Davis, Isaac Woodard attorney, and Rep. Garrett in The Seat of Justice and Gabe,  Dinner With Friends, Charleston Stage;  Sidney Bruhl, Deathrap, Footlight Players; Lyman Wyeth, Other Desert Cities, Pure Theatre; Kerry Max Cook, The Exonerated, Midtown Productions; Walter Barnes, Blood and Gifts, Woolfe Street Playhouse.  David lives in James Island with his wife, Rev. Kristen Barner, and their two dogs, Monty and Viva.
